Uncertainty Surrounds Democratic Party Floor Leader Election

With just two days left until the Democratic Party of Korea's by-election for floor leader, the outcome remains uncertain.

In the by-election scheduled for January 11, the Democratic Party will elect a new floor leader by combining the results of an online vote by dues-paying party members (20%) and a vote by National Assembly members (80%). As there is no clear frontrunner in this race, many expect the election to proceed to a runoff. Analysts predict that votes will be dispersed since all four candidates-Han Byungdo, Jin Sungjun, Park Jung, and Baek Hyeryun (listed in order of ballot number)-are not strongly associated with any particular faction.

Even when examining the candidates' pledges, there are no significant differences on major issues such as party reform to address the nomination donation scandal and the push for a second comprehensive special investigation. Some observers note that Assemblyman Han, who has experience both in Lee Jaemyung's presidential campaign and at the Blue House, may have a relative advantage. There is also an assessment that Assembly members Park and Baek have secured slightly more support from fellow lawmakers compared to the other candidates. During the televised joint debate held on the afternoon of January 8, the candidates all voiced similar, general statements such as "We will support the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration," but failed to demonstrate clear individuality or distinguishing characteristics.

However, the candidates gave differing answers when asked about the future of former floor leader Kim Byungki and the need for a full investigation into the nomination donation bribery scandal. Regarding the issue of voluntary resignation, candidate Park was the only one to express opposition, stating that "the official procedures of the party's official body must be followed."
