Store on Alert for 20 Minutes

An unusual incident occurred at a discount supermarket in Germany when a flock of 50 sheep entered the store. The sheep roamed around inside, occupying the area near the checkout counters and temporarily disrupting business operations. However, footage of the flock rushing into the supermarket quickly went viral on social media, resulting in unexpected publicity for the store.

Recently, German media outlets such as Ruhr24 reported that "on the 5th (local time), a flock of sheep broke into the Penny discount store in Burkzin, in the Haßberge region of Bavaria, and wandered around inside the store."

According to the reports, the sheep stayed in the store for about 20 minutes, moving between the aisles and around the checkout counters.

At the time, shepherd Dieter Mihiller was leading a flock of about 500 sheep along a narrow road when some of the group broke away.

In an interview with the local German media outlet Mainpost, the owner, shepherd Dieter Mihiller, said, "I never imagined the sheep would go into a store like that," and suggested that some may have stopped to eat acorns that had fallen by the roadside as they passed through an industrial area. Mihiller also explained that the sheep, having realized they had fallen behind the group, may have become confused, lost their way, and, in the process, entered the nearby supermarket after passing through the parking lot.

In another interview, he speculated, "They may have followed someone carrying a bag into the store," suggesting the sheep could have mistaken it for a feed bucket or a sack of salt.

After the sudden 'visit from the sheep,' the store had to be thoroughly cleaned. German public broadcaster ZDF reported, "It was complete chaos." J?rgen Kiefer, the manager of the Penny store, said, "This was the first time something like this happened," and added, "For a moment, I thought it was a hidden camera prank." He explained that although the sheep made a bit of a mess at the front of the store, there was no significant damage.

The store hired a professional cleaning company, and the distinctive smell of the sheep has now disappeared. However, Penny stated that it would not seek any compensation from the shepherd regarding this incident.

This incident also resulted in unexpected publicity. Penny posted sheep-themed content on social media, which received tens of thousands of 'likes' and positive responses. The company even incorporated a sheep image into its official Instagram account logo and began using the phrase 'M???h.'

Following the incident, Penny decided to sponsor the '50 sheep' for one year. On the 8th, the company announced, "We are actively working with the shepherd who owns the flock," and added, "The sponsorship will include providing feed for the sheep."
