Paju City Completes Phase 1 of Landscape Lighting
2.2km Section to Be Developed in Stages
Paju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on January 9 that it has completed 'Phase 1 of the Gongneung Lake Landscape Lighting Project,' which was launched to expand nighttime leisure and relaxation opportunities for citizens and to establish Gongneung Lake as a leading nighttime landmark in the city.
The 'Gongneung Tourist Site Landscape Lighting Project' is being implemented in phases with a total budget of 1.8 billion won, targeting a 2.2-kilometer section of the Gongneung Lake circular walking trail. This project aims to create a nighttime landscape that harmonizes with the natural environment of Gongneung Lake, focusing on environmental improvements that prioritize both pedestrian safety and landscape quality while avoiding excessive lighting installations.
The 1.1-kilometer section currently being developed as Phase 1 was selected for the 'Gyeonggi-do Tourism Resource Development Project,' securing 400 million won from the provincial government and 400 million won from the city government, with the landscape lighting installation completed in early January this year. The remaining 1.1-kilometer section will be completed by June 2026, with the city investing an additional 1 billion won.
The main components of the project include: ▲Improvement of lighting along the Gongneung Lake circular walking trail ▲Installation of indirect lighting to highlight the waterfront landscape ▲Introduction of nighttime landscape lighting on pedestrian bridge sections.
Through these efforts, vibrancy has been added to previously dark areas, creating a richer visual experience and a lively walking environment, allowing visitors to enjoy more comfortable strolls and relaxation around Gongneung Lake. In addition, by establishing unique nighttime landscape features within the Gongneung Tourist Site, the project is expected to attract more visitors, increase their length of stay, and contribute to making the area a major tourist destination as well as revitalizing the local economy.
For this first phase, subtle lighting has been used to accentuate the distinctive waterfront scenery of Gongneung Lake. In the second phase, the city plans to install a variety of sculptures and specialized lighting, further developing Gongneung Lake into a destination that attracts visitors both day and night.
An official from Paju City stated, "This first phase marks the beginning of the nighttime landscape creation for Gongneung Lake," adding, "We will continue to implement the project in stages to create a safe and high-quality relaxation space that citizens can visit comfortably even at night."
