Forcible Molestation at Bus Stop
"Overcome by a Moment of Emotion"
Prosecutors have requested a prison sentence for a Chinese national who approached and forcibly molested a teenage youth.
On January 8, during the first public trial and closing arguments for Mr. A, a Chinese national in his 30s, held at the Criminal Division 2 of the Jeju District Court (Presiding Judge Lim Jae-nam), the Jeju District Prosecutors' Office requested a two-year prison sentence for violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse (forcible molestation).
In addition, prosecutors asked the court to order Mr. A to complete a sexual violence treatment program, to disclose and notify his personal information, and to impose a three-year restriction on employment at institutions related to children, juveniles, and persons with disabilities.
Mr. A is accused of approaching a teenage youth at a bus stop in Jeju City on September 19 last year and forcibly molesting the victim by kissing their cheek, among other acts. He is also charged with sexually abusing the victim by causing sexual humiliation during the incident.
The prosecution stated, "Although the defendant's crime is serious, we took into account that he confessed belatedly and has no prior criminal record in Korea."
Mr. A has admitted to all the charges. His legal representative argued, "He did not intentionally approach the victim from the beginning; rather, it appears that he committed the crime in a moment of emotional impulse while asking for directions. The defendant's mother is currently hospitalized, so we ask for leniency so that he may return to his hometown."
The sentencing hearing for Mr. A is scheduled to take place on the morning of January 22.
