Major Transformation of Yeosu Petrochemical and Gwangyang Steel Industry Ecosystems
On January 5, Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon City requested the Governor of Jeollanam-do at the Suncheon Chamber of Commerce and Industry's New Year's event to cooperate in designating Suncheon's Haeryong and Gwangyang's Sepung, a 1.2 million pyeong area for future advanced industrial complexes, as a specialized RE100 semiconductor industrial complex.

Today, at the Jeollanam-do Provincial Government, Mayor Noh met with Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do and officially requested active cooperation in attracting the government’s strategic industry, the "RE100 Semiconductor National Industrial Complex," to the candidate site for the Suncheon Future Advanced Materials National Industrial Complex.
The eastern region of Jeollanam-do, including Suncheon City, is fully equipped with all the essential conditions for the semiconductor industry, such as power supply, water resources, and residential infrastructure, surpassing other regions.
With abundant renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power capable of supplying over 15GW of electricity, and a plentiful supply of industrial water from Juam Dam and Sangsa Dam, which collectively hold 5 billion tons of water, the region is well-positioned to support large-scale industrial operations.
The area also boasts excellent export infrastructure, including Gwangyang Port and Yeosu Airport, as well as outstanding residential conditions in Shindae and Seonwol districts-key hinterland cities of the Gwangyang Bay Area-and the National Garden, making it an optimal location to attract a "RE100 Complete Semiconductor Cluster."
Additionally, the candidate site for the Future Advanced Materials National Industrial Complex covers 1.2 million pyeong near Suncheon Haeryong and Gwangyang Sepung, with an additional 240,000 pyeong available for future expansion.
Suncheon City plans to overcome the power and water limitations of the Seoul metropolitan semiconductor cluster and, in line with the government’s policy to expand the semiconductor ecosystem to the southern region as part of local economic revitalization, actively attract semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to the RE100 Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, aiming for a major transformation of the declining industries in eastern Jeollanam-do.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu emphasized, "Attracting the RE100 Semiconductor National Industrial Complex is the last golden opportunity for the resurgence of eastern Jeollanam-do centered on Suncheon," adding, "The eastern region of Jeollanam-do, which can simultaneously resolve the power and water issues of the metropolitan semiconductor cluster, is the optimal location for establishing a national semiconductor industrial complex."
