The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on January 7 that it will introduce the "Dedicated Basic Academic Skills Teacher System" this year to strengthen the guarantee of students' basic academic skills.
Dedicated basic academic skills teachers will collaborate with homeroom teachers to conduct in-depth assessments of students' basic academic skill levels and provide customized guidance in basic academic skills classrooms during regular classes. Even after students reach a certain level and return to their regular classes, these teachers will continue to share instructional methods with homeroom teachers to support ongoing growth.
The Office of Education expects that, in addition to promoting students' growth, supporting homeroom teachers with expertise in basic academic skills will lead to responsible education.
The Office of Education will also newly operate "in-person learning camps during school breaks," centered on teachers who have completed the basic academic skills specialist course. Depending on the type, these camps will be run in general schools, urban schools in older districts, and small rural schools, providing intensive learning support for elementary students for two to three weeks during the summer and winter breaks.
In addition, "in-class basic academic skills support training" will be provided for elementary, middle, and high school teachers to enhance their practical teaching competencies.
Designating this year as the "Year of Responsible Education for Guaranteeing Basic Academic Skills: Point-Line-Plane," the Office of Education plans to ensure that the "point" of dedicated basic academic skills teachers connects with homeroom teachers as a "line," ultimately achieving the "plane" of responsible education for basic academic skills.
Do Sung-hoon, Superintendent of the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education, stated, "Basic academic skills are both a student's right to learn and the minimum right for dignity and the future as a human being," adding, "We will realize responsible education that does not give up on a single child and takes responsibility until the end."
