Rising Demand for Cost-Effective Whiskey
GS25, a convenience store operated by GS Retail, announced on January 7 that all 30,000 bottles of its cost-effective whiskey "Teacher's," priced around 10,000 won, sold out within a month of its launch, causing a sold-out frenzy.
With prolonged high inflation driving up food prices, demand for cost-effective whiskey is rapidly increasing.

"Teacher's" is a cost-effective whiskey introduced by GS25 in December of last year. Word quickly spread on social media and online communities that it offers excellent taste and aroma for its price, drawing significant attention immediately after its release.
In fact, Teacher's sold all 30,000 bottles of its initial stock within a month of launch, ranking first in whiskey sales. Among all new whiskey products introduced by GS25, it achieved the highest sales and revenue in the shortest period.
Riding on this popularity, GS25 will sequentially release an additional 20,000 bottles of "Teacher's" starting today. The company also plans to secure more than 30,000 additional bottles by March to ensure a stable supply.
Recently, the whiskey market has seen a clear polarization between cost-effective and premium products. According to GS25, sales of cost-effective whiskeys priced around 10,000 won increased by 21.2% year-on-year. Premium whiskeys priced above 100,000 won also saw a 63.3% increase, with both segments recording double-digit growth.
GS25 is strengthening its product lineup to match changing consumer trends. This month, it will offer a wide range of whiskeys at promotional prices, from cost-effective options like Teacher's, Langs 700ml, and Old Castle 700ml, all priced around 10,000 won, to premium selections such as Ballantine's 17 Year 500ml and Royal Salute 21 Year 500ml, priced in the 100,000-won range.
Kang Solbin, liquor team MD at GS Retail, said, "Teacher's is a product that accurately targeted customers seeking reasonably priced whiskey, confirming the potential of the cost-effective whiskey market. Going forward, we will continue to discover whiskey products that offer both price competitiveness and quality, further expanding our customers' choices in line with evolving consumption patterns."
