Samcheok City in Gangwon Province has achieved success by being selected for the "Infant-Friendly National Sports Center Construction Project," an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
With this selection, Samcheok City will establish a dedicated sports facility in the Gyodong area that can be used by both infants and their families. This is expected to accelerate the expansion of infant-oriented sports infrastructure, which has been lacking in the region.
The Samcheok Infant-Friendly National Sports Center will be built at 798 Gyodong, Samcheok, as a two-story building with a total floor area of 1,800 square meters. The total project cost is set at 10 billion won, with 4 billion won coming from the national government and 6 billion won from the city budget. The center will feature an activity zone with attractions such as a zipline, climbing wall, and jungle gym to promote physical activity, as well as indoor play and exercise facilities for younger children and shared spaces designed for the convenience of guardians.
A city official stated, "This selection is a meaningful achievement for expanding sports welfare for infants and improving the quality of life for local residents," adding, "We will create a sports facility that will satisfy both children and parents."
Samcheok City plans to complete the necessary administrative procedures in 2026, proceed with basic and detailed designs, and aims to begin construction in 2027.
