Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was captured by the U.S. military and is now being held in a detention center in New York, has drawn attention for his choice of tracksuit attire.

On the 3rd (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump posted a photo on his social networking service (SNS) Truth Social, along with the caption, "Maduro is on board the USS Iwo Jima." In the photo, President Maduro is seen with his eyes covered by a blindfold and his hands cuffed. He appears to have been completely unprepared for his arrest, wearing a Nike tracksuit instead of a suit or military uniform. According to CNN, the U.S. military dragged President Maduro and his wife out of their bedroom while they were sleeping in the middle of the night.

The gray tracksuit worn by President Maduro is believed to consist of a Windrunner hoodie for the top and fleece joggers for the bottoms. According to Nike's official website in Korea, these items are available for purchase at approximately 150,000 KRW and 120,000 KRW, respectively.

David Sanger, a journalist for The New York Times, told CNN, "I would like to ask what message they intend to convey by releasing this photo," pointing out, "The humiliating image of him in sportswear carries elements of propaganda."

Even exchanged New Year greetings with DEA agents

Meanwhile, President Maduro arrived in New York, United States, that night and was placed in a local detention center. Before being incarcerated, Maduro appeared in a video taken at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) office, where he said to the DEA agent escorting him in Spanish, "Good evening. Right?" and then switched to English, saying, "Good night, Happy New Year," displaying an air of composure.

Former President Maduro was incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York City. This facility is known for housing high-profile inmates, including hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, who was convicted of sex crimes, and Sam Bankman-Fried, the bankrupt founder of cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

After traveling on the USS Iwo Jima to the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Maduro transferred to a U.S. government aircraft prepared in advance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and was flown to Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York. Foreign media captured images of Maduro disembarking from the plane at Stewart, surrounded by FBI agents and other federal officials, as he set foot on American soil. Maduro then boarded a helicopter and arrived in Manhattan, New York City, at around 7 p.m., after which the U.S. government brought Maduro and his wife to the DEA New York office.

Indicted in 2020 for drug trafficking and money laundering

President Maduro, who was indicted in March 2020 during the first Trump administration on charges including drug trafficking and money laundering, is expected to appear in federal court in Manhattan next week. At the time, the U.S. Department of Justice released a superseding indictment. The new indictment added his wife, son, and Venezuela's Minister of the Interior Diosdado Cabello, among other family members and close associates, as defendants. According to the U.S. government, they are accused of collaborating with the former Colombian rebel group FARC, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, and drug cartels to smuggle thousands of tons of cocaine into the United States.
