Multiple explosions were reported in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, causing unrest as residents rushed out into the streets.
On the morning of January 3 (local time), major international news outlets such as the Associated Press reported that several explosions had occurred in Caracas.

According to the Associated Press, at around 2 a.m., at least seven explosions and the sound of low-flying aircraft were heard in Caracas. Residents were seen running into the streets throughout the city.
Other foreign media, including AFP, also reported hearing aircraft noises and explosions, as well as witnessing plumes of smoke in Caracas.
Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of expanding ongoing military operations in waters near Venezuela into a ground operation against Venezuela. Some observers interpret this as an attempt by the United States to pressure Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down.
The Trump administration has previously sunk vessels suspected of transporting drugs off the coast of Venezuela and seized oil tankers accused of violating international law.
