Deputy Mayor Arrives to Draw the Blueprint for Andong's "Next 20 Years"

Andong City has welcomed a key, hands-on leader who will drive the city's infrastructure and future growth strategies. Bae Yongsu was officially inaugurated as the 35th Deputy Mayor of Andong City on January 1, 2026.

Deputy Mayor Bae, a native of Andong in North Gyeongsang Province, graduated from Andong Gyeongan High School and the Department of Civil Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University. He began his public service career in 1998 as a civil engineering officer after passing the local government exam. Since then, he has held a range of core positions in provincial administration, including Head of the Nakdong River Project Task Force, Director of Rural Development, Director of Balanced Development, and Director of Water Management and Disaster Prevention. In these roles, he has led major social overhead capital (SOC) projects and regional balanced development policies on the ground.

He also served as Deputy County Governor of Goryeong, Director of Roads, Railways, and Airports for North Gyeongsang Province, Deputy Mayor of Gumi, and Director General of Construction and Urban Affairs for North Gyeongsang Province, accumulating comprehensive administrative experience across roads, railways, and urban development. In particular, his track record of simultaneously designing transportation infrastructure and urban growth strategies has earned him a reputation within and outside the administration as a "field-oriented urban construction expert."

In his inauguration remarks, Deputy Mayor Bae stated, "Based on my accumulated experience in urban construction, I will redraw the future map of Andong," adding, "Together with the citizens, I will build Andong into a world-class city."

Specific initiatives include dramatically improving access to the Seoul metropolitan area by extending the Jungbu Inland Line (Icheon to Mungyeong) to Andong, and establishing a wide-area railway network connecting Uiseong and Andong in preparation for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport era. Through these efforts, he aims to transform Andong into a transportation hub city connecting east-west and north-south corridors.

In addition, he emphasized his commitment to ensuring the swift establishment of the Andong Bio-Life National Industrial Complex and to securing a national medical school for the region, a long-held local aspiration. He also pledged to strengthen Andong's status as a cultural tourism hub and to focus administrative capabilities on realizing "Garden City Andong," where nature and people coexist.

With Deputy Mayor Bae's inauguration, Andong City is expected to accelerate structural transformation across the city, including the expansion of transportation infrastructure, fostering of new growth industries, and enhancement of medical and cultural competitiveness.
