Cho Kuk, leader of the Innovation Party, paid a visit to former President Moon Jae-in on the first day of the new year, January 1.
Cho, who served as Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs and Minister of Justice during the Moon administration, met with former President Moon at Pyeongsan Village in Yangsan, Gyeongnam, and stated, "A landslide victory in the local elections is necessary to ensure political accountability for the forces behind the insurrection."
He went on to reference the 2018 local elections, in which the Democratic Party achieved a sweeping victory, and emphasized, "We will unite the power of the democratic and progressive bloc to realize '2018 Again.'"
Cho also said, "I will play the role of a red team (meaning a strategic opponent) for the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration," adding, "Such a role will benefit the entire democratic bloc."
Former President Moon remarked, "The process of overcoming the insurrection is ongoing," and stressed, "It is extremely important to deliver political judgment against the far-right insurrectionist forces in this year's local elections."
He added, "I hope that by maintaining the framework of a broad coalition, the democratic bloc will achieve a major victory and the Innovation Party will see meaningful results."
He further stated, "Expanding and strengthening democracy is the mission of the Innovation Party," and noted, "I believe the Innovation Party has a role to play in areas the Democratic Party government has not considered or has been unable to address."
Later that afternoon, Cho, together with Seo Wangjin, floor leader, and other party leadership, is scheduled to pay respects at the grave of former President Roh Moo-hyun and visit Kwon Yangsook.
