Woori Bank Appoints Jung Eechul as Head of Digital Sales, Injecting 'Galaxy Success DNA'

Jung Eechul Appointed as New Head of Digital Sales Group
Bringing in an External Expert with 28 Years of Experience at Samsung Electronics and Microsoft

Woori Bank Appoints Jung Eechul as Head of Digital Sales, Injecting 'Galaxy Success DNA' Jung Eechul, Head of Digital Sales Group at Woori Bank

Woori Bank has made a bold move in the platform race by appointing a global software expert with experience at Samsung Electronics and Microsoft as the new head of its Digital Sales Group.

On January 1, Woori Bank announced that it has recruited Jung Eechul (56), former Executive Director of Samsung Electronics' MX Division, as the new Head of the Digital Sales Group (Vice President). Starting his first day on January 2, Jung will oversee Woori Bank's digital platform strategy and all aspects of non-face-to-face sales.

This appointment is a strategic move to secure leadership in the fiercely competitive 'financial super app' market by transplanting proven technology leadership from global big tech companies, dramatically enhancing the platform's completeness, and gaining dominance in the digital market.

Jung Eechul, the new group head, is regarded as a top expert in the software field, having worked on the front lines of the global IT industry for about 28 years.

From 1997 to 2005, he worked at Microsoft headquarters in the United States, gaining expertise in advanced software development processes and global standard verification systems. He then joined Samsung Electronics' Wireless Division (now MX Division), where he worked for about 20 years until 2025, serving as 'Head of SW Quality Team (Executive Director)' and overseeing the software competitiveness of the Galaxy smartphone series.

In particular, during his time at Samsung Electronics, he led a large-scale software verification organization, spearheaded the introduction of AI-based test automation, and drove customer experience (CX)-centered quality innovation. He is recognized as a key executive who contributed to Samsung's mobile devices achieving the top global position.

Woori Bank expects Jung's background to play a decisive role in strengthening the competitiveness of its integrated personal and corporate financial platform, especially by incorporating AI.

In line with this appointment, Woori Bank has reorganized the role of the 'Digital Sales Group.' The senior division within the group has been changed from 'WON Banking Division' to 'Platform Division,' clearly signaling the bank's intention to pursue platform-centric business. The previously scattered 'Banking as a Service (BaaS) business' and 'non-face-to-face pension marketing' functions have been integrated into the group to enhance execution capabilities.

Jung is expected to take the lead in expanding the customer base through non-face-to-face channels and revitalizing the banking app from the outset of his tenure. He will tackle major tasks such as: attracting new customers by rebuilding the mobile web, boosting usage of Woori WON Banking, and expanding partnership businesses based on Banking as a Service (BaaS)-all key goals of the '2026 Digital Business Plan.'

Additionally, he plans to accelerate the creation of new digital revenue streams by improving the convenience of the supply chain finance platform 'OneBiz Plaza' for corporate clients, activating 'Woori SAFE Settlement,' and expanding its application to more industries. Furthermore, Jung's extensive experience in mobile business is expected to positively impact the competitiveness of core partnership businesses such as the 'Samsung Wallet Points & Money Service,' which is a key focus for Woori Bank.

An industry insider commented, "Just as Hyundai Motor Company recruited IT talent to transform into a mobility company, Woori Bank is making a strong statement by recruiting top-tier talent from manufacturing and software to become a technology-driven 'platform-leading bank.'"

A Woori Bank representative stated, "Jung Eechul is a rare leader who combines Samsung's meticulous quality management with Microsoft's flexible culture of innovation. With his addition, Woori Bank's digital financial services will take a significant technological leap forward."

Jung shared his ambition, saying, "I will infuse my philosophy of software quality and customer-centric thinking, developed at global big tech companies, into our financial platform. I aim to create a 'next-level financial app' that customers trust the most and find convenient to use in their daily lives."
