Bae Kyunghoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, stated on January 1, "The year 2026 will be the year when science, technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) change the fate of the nation."
In his New Year's address on this day, Deputy Prime Minister Bae said, "This will be a year of great leap forward that will make people's lives more prosperous and safer." He pledged that the Ministry of Science and ICT would be at the forefront of this transformation and added, "We will work silently and relentlessly."
Deputy Prime Minister Bae expressed his intention to ensure that all citizens benefit from AI and to expand the nation's presence in the global market. He outlined plans to secure world-class, independent AI models to accelerate AI transformation across industries, while also working to build an ecosystem encompassing both semiconductors and AI.
He also emphasized the importance of scientific and technological innovation to overcome the trend of low growth and unlock the country's economic potential. He stated, "We will fully launch the K-Moonshot Project, which takes on national challenges to secure fundamental technologies," and added, "We will mobilize the nation's full capabilities to achieve a paradigm shift in science and technology through AI."
He addressed the importance of information security as well. Deputy Prime Minister Bae said, "We will eliminate the widespread complacency about security among companies and establish an institutional foundation so that security is recognized as a top priority in corporate management."
He continued, "We will explicitly stipulate the security responsibilities of chief executive officers (CEOs) in the law and impose punitive fines on companies that repeatedly experience security incidents."
Finally, Deputy Prime Minister Bae announced plans to significantly increase the budget for regional autonomous research and development (R&D) in order to foster self-sustaining innovation ecosystems in local areas and lead AI-driven regional innovation.
