Kwon Chilseung: "Is Lee Hyehoon's Statement on Insurrection as an Illegal Act a 'Relevant Act' to People Power Party?... Must Move Beyond Childish Behavior"

"People Power Party Treats Martial Law as a Mere Incident, Fails to Acknowledge the Harm"
"Treating Martial Law as a Mere Incident, Failing to Recognize the Harm"

On December 31, Assemblyman Kwon Chilseung of the Democratic Party of Korea expressed regret over the People Power Party's use of terms such as "conversion" in response to the nomination of Lee Hyehoon as Minister of Planning and Budget, after she defined former President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of emergency martial law as an "illegal act" and issued an apology. Kwon emphasized the need to recognize the gravity of martial law and insurrection, and to move beyond partisan logic.

Through social media on the same day, Assemblyman Kwon described Lee's apology-where she stated, "Insurrection is an illegal act" and admitted, "I am responsible for not acting courageously"-as "simply a common-sense and rational statement." However, he criticized the People Power Party for characterizing this as a "relevant act" or "defection of an opportunist," pointing out, "If you speak this way, Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law is treated not as an illegal act but merely as a simple 'incident.'"

In this context, he stated, "This amounts to not acknowledging the illegality and the tremendous harm caused to democracy and the national community," and advised, "I hope you will review the Constitutional Court's impeachment ruling once again." Assemblyman Kwon added, "If the main opposition party is so focused on justifying insurrection, then from a purely advantageous standpoint, the Democratic Party might even welcome it." However, he warned, "If this continues, it will go beyond the level of merely harming the party and become a tool for amplifying and reproducing conflict, ultimately turning into a group that harms the nation itself." He argued that while such actions by the People Power Party might benefit the Democratic Party in local elections, they are ultimately detrimental to both the party and the country.

Assemblyman Kwon urged the People Power Party, "Please break free from childish behavior that seeks minor gains within your own camp."
