UNIST (President Chong Rae Park) has been selected as the final implementing institution for the R&D management policy research project commissioned by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
On the 31st, UNIST announced that it had won the project titled "Research on Establishing and Activating the Foundation for R&D Management Support Systems" through this competitive bidding. The research will be conducted over approximately seven months, from December 2025 to July 2026. The total research funding amounts to 70 million KRW.
This policy research aims to diagnose the current limitations of R&D management in Korea and to create an environment where researchers can fully focus on their research. The project is being promoted to establish the concept of a Korean-style R&D management system and to develop plans for building a support framework.
The study will be carried out by a single research team consisting of 17 members, including UNIST faculty and research administration experts, with Kim Kwanmyung, Director of Research Affairs at UNIST, serving as the principal investigator.
Director Kim Kwanmyung stated, "This policy research goes beyond simple institutional improvement and is significant in establishing an R&D management system that actually works on the ground at the national level."
He emphasized, "Based on the research administration innovation experience accumulated by UNIST, we will propose a policy model that can be applied in the mid- to long-term."
The main research topics include: ▲ Analysis of domestic and international R&D management trends and implications ▲ Proposals for improving research administration services throughout the entire R&D cycle ▲ Strategies to enhance the R&D management expertise of research support personnel ▲ Plans to establish and advance R&D management networks. The research team plans to integrate these findings and present a roadmap for an R&D management support system that can be applied over the next 10 years.
Recently, UNIST has also been recognized by the government for its achievements in research administration and R&D management system innovation, including receiving the Minister of Science and ICT Award, drawing further attention to the outcomes of this project.
President Chong Rae Park commented, "This project is a new attempt in which researchers and research administrators jointly design R&D management policy," adding, "We will link and expand UNIST's field-oriented research administration innovation model to government policy and contribute to building an R&D management ecosystem based on public-private cooperation."
Lee Kwangho, Head of Research Planning and the person in charge of the practical implementation of this project, said, "We will focus on deriving improvement measures that researchers and research administration staff can directly experience," and added, "We will devote our efforts to ensuring that this becomes a practical, Korean-style R&D management system based on field analysis and validation."
