Gwangyang City in South Jeolla Province announced on December 31 that it will launch a support program for wig purchase expenses for cancer patients starting in 2026, aiming to help restore their self-esteem and strengthen their will to undergo treatment.

Eligible applicants must meet all three of the following criteria: they must have been registered residents of Gwangyang City for at least one year as of the application date and actually reside there; they must have been diagnosed with a type of cancer eligible for support under the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s “Notice on Medical Expense Support Standards for Cancer Patients”; and they must have a medical opinion stating that a wig is necessary due to hair loss caused by cancer treatment.

The city plans to provide a one-time subsidy covering 90% of the wig purchase cost, up to a maximum of 1 million won. Recipients must apply at the Gwangyang City Public Health Center within one year from the date of issuance of the medical opinion, submitting the receipt for the wig purchase, a copy of their bank account, and other relevant documents.

Ban Misoon, Director of the Health Promotion Division, stated, "We hope this support program will help cancer patients and their families overcome the challenges of treatment," adding, "We will continue to support patients’ ongoing treatment and care through various policies, including medical expense support, and strive to realize Gwangyang as an inclusive city where everyone can thrive together."
