On December 31, Dongducheon City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it had completed the installation of vehicle protective fences on the downhill section near Jihaeng Elementary School to enhance pedestrian safety within the school zone.

This project is a proactive measure in response to the ongoing concerns about vehicle-related accidents in school zones. It goes beyond the existing pedestrian-focused facilities by introducing safety features designed to withstand vehicle collisions. In particular, the city applied facilities with higher protective performance, taking into account the characteristics of downhill sections where vehicle speed tends to increase.
The installed protective fence is an SB1-grade vehicle barrier, which meets the performance standard of withstanding a collision with an 8-ton vehicle traveling at 55 kilometers per hour at a 15-degree angle. This design effectively blocks vehicles from entering pedestrian areas in the event of a vehicle leaving the roadway or a crash, and minimizes the impact transmitted to children.
This installation of the SB1-grade vehicle protective fence marks the first application of its kind in Dongducheon City's school zones and is expected to significantly raise the quality of traffic safety facilities.
Dongducheon City plans to gradually expand the installation of effective safety facilities, such as vehicle protective fences, focusing on sections within school zones that are considered high-risk for accidents or require enhanced pedestrian protection due to road structure.
A Dongducheon City official stated, "School zones are areas where accident prevention is the top priority above all else," adding, "We will thoroughly review on-site conditions and do our utmost to create a walking environment where children can commute to school with peace of mind."
