Press Release Attached Explaining
"Investigation Was Conducted Under Government Direction"
Coupang disclosed the results of its so-called 'self-investigation', which had been announced without consultation with the Korean government, to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
According to the SEC filing system on December 30 (local time), Coupang stated in documents submitted the previous day that "there was access to 33 million customer accounts, but the perpetrator only stored limited data from approximately 3,000 accounts," and "the data in question was deleted without being shared with any third party."
This is identical to the results of Coupang's internal investigation announced on December 25. Previously, Baek Kyunghoon, Deputy Prime Minister for Science and Minister of Science and ICT, who leads the 'Coupang Incident Pan-Government Task Force (TF)', criticized the move, saying it was not agreed upon with the government in advance and described it as "maliciously intended."
Coupang also attached a translated version of the press release issued on December 26, in which it clarified that the investigation was not a 'self-investigation' but was conducted in cooperation with the government under government direction. Furthermore, in the 'forward-looking statements' section of the disclosure, Coupang routinely noted that future investigation results may change.
Coupang also disclosed its compensation plan totaling 1.685 trillion won. However, Korean consumers and civic groups are criticizing this compensation plan, arguing that it is merely a marketing tool designed to encourage additional purchases.
