Press Release Attached Explaining
"Investigation Was Conducted Under Government Direction"
Coupang disclosed the results of its so-called "self-investigation," which had been announced without prior consultation with the South Korean government, to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
According to the SEC's disclosure system on the 30th (local time), Coupang stated in documents submitted the previous day, "There was access to 33 million customer accounts, but the perpetrator only stored limited data from approximately 3,000 accounts," adding, "The data in question was deleted without being shared with any third parties."
This is the same as the findings Coupang announced in its own investigation on the 25th. Previously, Baek Kyunghoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, who leads the "Coupang Incident Pan-Government Task Force," criticized the move, saying it was done without prior agreement with the government and accused Coupang of having "malicious intent."
Coupang also attached a translated press release from the 26th, explaining that the investigation was not a "self-investigation" but was conducted in cooperation with the government and under government direction. Additionally, in the "forward-looking statements" section of the disclosure, Coupang routinely noted that the results of future investigations could change.
Coupang also disclosed that it had announced a compensation plan worth 1.685 trillion won. However, South Korean consumers and civic groups are criticizing this compensation plan, arguing that it is merely a marketing tool to induce additional purchases.
