Wonju City Completes Final Ownership Transfer of National Gangwon Specialized Science Museum Site

Key Facility Within Camprong Citizens Park
Establishing a Stable Foundation for Science Museum Operations

Wonju City, Gangwon Province, announced on December 31 that it had completed the final registration of ownership transfer for the site of the National Gangwon Science Museum, located within Camp Long Civic Park (1191-6 Taejang-dong), to the Ministry of Science and ICT on December 19. The transferred site consists of one parcel, with an area of 24,000 square meters, and was sold for 9.12 billion won.

This ownership transfer was carried out in accordance with the business agreement signed in January 2022 among the Ministry of Science and ICT, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and Wonju City, as well as relevant laws, to fulfill the regulation that "the science museum site shall be purchased and owned by the state."

- The city has thoroughly prepared the ownership transfer process without any setbacks, and with the completion of this registration, it has solidified the legal foundation for the stable operation of national infrastructure facilities.

In particular, this transfer was made possible through a series of administrative procedures in which Wonju City first secured ownership of the science museum site in advance by signing a national property sales contract with the Ministry of National Defense for the former Camp Long site, and then transferred it to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

Meanwhile, the process of securing ownership of the entire Camp Long site is also proceeding smoothly. Depending on the outcome of ongoing litigation, the city plans to pay the 15.8 billion won appraised value as of 2019 in three installments, with the final payment to be completed by October 2026, thereby fully acquiring ownership of the entire Camp Long site.

Wonju City plans to ensure thorough safety and route management to prevent any inconvenience to science museum visitors during the ongoing Camp Long Civic Park development project. Taking into account the unique circumstances of ongoing construction, the city will continue rigorous on-site inspections and inter-agency consultations for the sections adjacent to the science museum.

Won Kangsu, Mayor of Wonju, stated, "With the completion of this ownership transfer, we have established the administrative foundation for the National Gangwon Science Museum to fully take its place as a central science and culture hub in the central region. In addition to the ongoing Camp Long Civic Park development, we will organically connect various cultural and sports facilities such as the city art museum, the northern complex sports center (swimming pool), and the youth culture center to create a beloved multi-purpose cultural space for our citizens."
