President Lee Jae-myung approved the dismissal of Yoo Cheolhwan, Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, on December 30, following allegations of leniency regarding the luxury handbag case involving First Lady Kim Keonhee.
The Office of the President announced through a press briefing on the same day that President Lee had approved the dismissal of Chairperson Yoo. Previously, Yoo had expressed his intention to resign with about one year remaining in his term.
During Yoo's tenure, the commission concluded the investigation into the First Lady's acceptance of a luxury handbag with a finding of "no violation," which sparked controversy over an allegedly lenient investigation.
Chairperson Yoo, who was a law school classmate of former President Yoon Suk-yeol at Seoul National University, faced criticism from the opposition at the time of his appointment for being a political reward.
