News Consumption via TikTok Continues to Rise Each Year
YouTube and Facebook Tied for Second Place
More than 4 out of 10 Americans in their 20s get their news through TikTok.
On December 29 (local time), the Pew Research Center, a U.S. polling organization, released a survey on major news consumption platforms among Americans aged 18 to 29. According to the results, 43% of respondents said they "regularly get news from TikTok," making it the most popular platform. The percentage of young people using TikTok for news was 32% in 2023, increased to 39% last year, and has expanded further this year.
In contrast, YouTube and Instagram, which were tied for first place at 40% last year, have dropped to joint second and fourth place, respectively. Facebook jumped from 38% last year to 41% this year, but remained tied for second place alongside YouTube. The proportion of respondents who said they get news through X (formerly Twitter), which was acquired by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, was 21%, while Reddit accounted for 18%.
Notably, 76% of respondents said they get news from social networking services (SNS), far surpassing news websites (60%) or email newsletters (28%). Additionally, 50% of respondents said they trust SNS as a news source, a figure nearly identical to the 51% trust level for national media outlets.
