At approximately 8:55 p.m. on December 29, a fire broke out at a pig farm in Sangdong-myeon, Gimhae-si, Gyeongnam Province.
As a result of the fire, a total of 1,880 pigs, including 280 sows and 1,600 piglets, perished. All four pig barns were destroyed, causing an estimated property loss of about 600 million won, according to the fire department.
All four Korean nationals and three foreign nationals who were in the pig barns managed to evacuate on their own, and there were no casualties.
After receiving a report that a fire had started in the farrowing house, the fire authorities dispatched 88 personnel and 35 pieces of equipment. They brought the main blaze under control by 10:57 p.m. on the same day and fully extinguished the fire by 12:29 a.m. the following day, December 30.
At around 9:20 p.m., Fire Response Level 1 was issued, mobilizing 31 to 50 pieces of equipment from three to seven fire stations. This alert was lifted at 10:16 p.m.
The police and fire authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire.
