Gyeonggi Province has begun in earnest to improve laws and systems regarding long-term unrecovered concession areas that have not been returned for over 70 years.

Following the establishment of the 'Gyeonggi Province US Military Returned Concession Area Legislative Promotion Support Group' on November 10, Gyeonggi Province held the second meeting of the legislative promotion support group at the Northern Government Complex on the 30th to discuss support measures for long-term unrecovered concession areas.


The meeting was attended by Kim Sangsoo, Director of the Balanced Development Planning Office of Gyeonggi Province, So Seonggyu, Vice President of Daejin University, Lee Heeeun, Vice President for External Affairs at Pyeongtaek University, as well as experts and officials from Uijeongbu City, Dongducheon City, and Paju City, totaling more than 10 participants.


The participants agreed on the need to establish a legal foundation to enable practical compensation and customized development that reflects the unique characteristics of each region for long-term unrecovered concession areas. Going forward, they plan to widely gather opinions from relevant local governments and experts and propose legislative enactment and amendment to the government and the National Assembly.


Kim Sangsoo, Director of the Balanced Development Planning Office of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "During the Ministry of National Defense's work report on the 18th, the President instructed the government to consider government-led development, reflecting the highest level of public expectation for the development of returned concession areas. We believe that institutional support is essential to restore the legitimate rights and interests of local residents and to achieve practical regional development, and we will prepare measures for institutional improvement."
