From Yudalsan Bell-Ringing to Hyangiram Sunrise:
A Variety of Events Across 21 Locations in 13 Cities and Counties of South Jeolla to Welcome the Year of the Red Horse
As we bid farewell to the tumultuous year of 2025 and welcome the Year of the Red Horse, Byeongo, sunset and sunrise events will take place across various locations in South Jeolla Province.
According to South Jeolla Province on December 30, this year’s year-end and New Year’s sunset and sunrise events will be held simultaneously at 21 locations in 13 cities and counties throughout the province.
On the last day of the year, December 31, starting at 11:35 p.m., a New Year’s bell-ringing ceremony will be held in front of the Citizens’ Bell Pavilion on Yudalsan Mountain in Mokpo. The event will feature a pre-ceremony performance, the bell-ringing, fireworks, and more.
At Hyangiram Hermitage in Yeosu, a sunset event is also scheduled for the same day, starting at 5:00 p.m. Visitors can enjoy the sunset, light wish candles, participate in the New Year’s bell-ringing, and watch a celebratory fireworks show. In the Jangcheok Village area of Sora-myeon, Yeosu (from 3:00 p.m.), a separate event for the divided sunrise (sunset) will also take place.
At Waon Beach in Suncheon, from 4:20 p.m. to 6:10 p.m., a variety of activities will be held, including burning a moon house (Daljip), tying wish ribbons, making wish lanterns, and sharing rice cake soup. In Haenam (Ttangkkeut Village in Songji-myeon from 6:00 p.m.; Osiano Camping Site in Hwawon-myeon from 4:00 p.m.) and Jindo (Sebang Sunset Observatory from 4:00 p.m.), diverse events such as burning a moon house will help ease the regrets of the fading year 2025.
Sunrise events to welcome the New Year will also continue.
In Yeosu, a representative sunrise spot in South Jeolla Province, the Hyangiram Sunrise Festival (starting at 7:00 a.m.) will take place. Marking its 30th anniversary this year, the event will feature sunrise viewing, sharing of rice cakes and beverages, New Year’s celebratory performances, and more.
At Ocheon Green Plaza in Suncheon (starting at 6:30 a.m.), a New Year’s sunrise event will be held. Various programs are prepared, including a pre-ceremony performance, sunrise viewing, and writing wishes for the Year of the Red Horse.
At Namyeol Sunrise Beach in Goheung (starting at 6:00 a.m.), the first sunrise of 2026 will be celebrated with a fireworks show, band performances, and writing wish messages, among other diverse events.
Additionally, joyful sunrise events such as prayer rituals and sharing rice cake soup will be held in Gurye (Bongseongsan Mountain in Gurye-eup, 7:00 a.m.), Hwasun (Gaemi Mountain Observatory, 7:00 a.m.), Jangheung (Jeongnamjin Observatory, 6:00 a.m.), Haenam (Ttangkkeut Village in Songji-myeon, 6:00 a.m.; Ososae Rest Area in Bukil-myeon, 5:00 a.m.), Muan (Doripo in Haeje-myeon, 6:30 a.m.), Wando (Shinji Myeongsashimni Event Plaza, 6:30 a.m.), and Jindo (Gagye Beach, Jindo Tower, Jodo Lighthouse, etc., 6:30 a.m.).
South Jeolla Province will mobilize all administrative resources to ensure the safety of these sunset and sunrise events.
Safety personnel will be deployed at each event location, and efforts will be made to secure ambulance access routes. In addition, safety measures such as checking decks and railings around event venues (mountains and beaches) to prevent falls, as well as inspections of facilities, will be carried out.
