The police have referred key executives of the Unification Church, who are suspected of making illegal split political donations to politicians, to the prosecution.
On December 30, the Special Investigation Task Force of the National Office of Investigation at the Korean National Police Agency referred Jeong Wonju, former chief secretary to Unification Church leader Hak Ja Han, and Song Kwangseok, former president of the Unification Church-affiliated Universal Peace Federation (UPF), to the prosecution on charges of violating the Political Funds Act.
They are accused of systematically delivering illegal political donations to both ruling and opposition politicians in early 2019.
The police are continuing their investigation into allegations that the Unification Church delivered tens of millions of won in cash and valuables to Jeon Jae-soo, former Minister of Oceans and Fisheries; Lim Jongseong, former lawmaker of the Democratic Party; and Kim Kyuhwan, former lawmaker of the United Future Party, between 2018 and 2020.
