Gangwon Tourism Foundation Successfully Concludes "Untan Godo 1330 Festival"
4,916 Participants Attend... Emerges as a Core Model for Tourism Linking Former Coal Mining Regions
"Revitalizing Former Mining Areas" ... Boosting the Local Economy Across Four Cities and Counties
The Gangwon Tourism Foundation (CEO Choi Sunghyun, hereinafter referred to as the Foundation) announced on the 30th that it had successfully concluded the Untan Godo 1330 Theme Trail Festival, which was held on the "Untan Godo 1330" trail course connecting four former coal mining regions (Taebaek, Samcheok, Yeongwol, and Jeongseon), confirming its potential as a tourism content linking these areas.
Through this project, the Foundation attracted a total of 4,916 participants and operated walking (trekking) travel programs in conjunction with local festivals and tourism resources in each region. By combining the historical background of Untan Godo, which was once used as a coal transportation route, with local cultural assets, the program was designed to allow participants to experience both trekking and regional tourism.
Key programs by region included: ▲Taebaek's "Source of the Hangang and Nakdonggang Rivers Festival" ▲Samcheok's "The Challenge Continues: Begin Again" ▲Yeongwol's "Kim Satgat Cultural Festival," with trekking courses linked to existing local festivals to further motivate visits.
In particular, in Jeongseon, the Foundation collaborated with Kangwon Land to operate the "Untan Godo Trail of Wishes Trekking" and held the "All-in Market" (Maenggeuljang), which involved local small business owners. This approach expanded participants' length of stay and encouraged local spending, realizing a community-based tourism model for mutual growth.
Based on the results of this event, the Foundation plans to gradually expand brand awareness of "Untan Godo 1330" and strengthen content linking the four cities and counties, continuously discovering and operating field-oriented tourism content that can contribute to revitalizing the local economy.
Choi Sunghyun, CEO of the Gangwon Tourism Foundation, stated, "Through this event, we have confirmed the demand and potential for tourism in former coal mining areas," adding, "We will strive to ensure that Untan Godo 1330 becomes a core tourism resource that connects not only trail tourism but also local culture and the economy."
