Gwangyang City Achieves 'Local Economic Revitalization' by Attracting Nationwide Sports Events

Attracting 115 Teams and 2,030 Athletes
Generating a Tangible Local Economic Impact of 1.5 Billion Won

Gwangyang City announced that it achieved meaningful results in revitalizing the local economy in 2025 by attracting winter training teams and hosting nationwide sports competitions.


First, the city saw remarkable success in attracting winter training camps, befitting its reputation as a "premium sports city." Through proactive efforts, Gwangyang City brought in 115 teams and 2,030 athletes from across the country, who visited for various stove league tournaments and winter training sessions. It is estimated that this generated a tangible economic impact of approximately 1.5 billion won for the local economy.

In addition, Gwangyang City successfully hosted a total of nine nationwide sports competitions.


Major events included the Baegun National High School Soccer Tournament, the Gwangyang Mayor's Cup National Archery Competition for Men and Women, the Baegunsan National Volleyball Tournament for Men and Women, the Gwangyang Mayor's Cup National Tennis Tournament for Men and Women, the Seomjingang Flower Road Marathon, the Korea Business Taekwondo Federation President's Cup National Business Taekwondo Competition, the Gwangyang Mayor's Cup National Ground Golf Tournament, the Gwangyang Bay National Youth Swimming Competition, and the Gwangyang Mayor's Cup National Badminton Tournament.


Approximately 20,000 people, including athletes and officials, visited Gwangyang City to participate in and attend these various events, such as the Baegun National High School Soccer Tournament. This led to a tangible revitalization of the local economy, especially in service sectors such as restaurants, accommodations, and bathhouses. The resulting economic impact is estimated to be around 7 billion won.


Kang Younghwa, Head of the Sports Division, said, "I deeply appreciate all the teams from across the country who visited Gwangyang City this year," adding, "Next year, we will do our utmost to create a comfortable and pleasant environment for training and competitions by thoroughly maintaining sports facilities and ensuring hygiene management at accommodations and restaurants, so that even more teams will choose Gwangyang."
