Mokpo City in South Jeolla Province will hold the Citizen’s Bell-Ringing Ceremony at the Millennium Citizens’ Bell Pavilion on Nojeokbong Peak, Yudalsan, on the night of December 31 to mark the end of 2025 and welcome the Year of Byeongo, 2026.
The ceremony will take place precisely at midnight on January 1, 2026, with the solemn sound of the bell announcing the start of the New Year. Distinguished guests from various sectors of the region, citizens, and tourists will participate together, and the bell will be rung 33 times to pray for the well-being of the community, the happiness of the citizens, and a new leap forward for Mokpo.
At the event site, a variety of side events will enhance the meaning of the New Year’s celebration, including a wish paper activity where citizens can write down their hopes for the coming year, and a sharing event for tteokguk (rice cake soup).
In particular, starting at 11 p.m. on the day, the Mokpo Chapter of the National Movement for the Right Living will host the tteokguk sharing event, while the Saemaeul Women’s Association will greet citizens and tourists braving the cold winter night with warm tea. In addition, the Mokpo Chapter of the National Unification Advisory Council will provide commemorative gifts to participants of the bell-ringing ceremony to further heighten the festive atmosphere.
A city official stated, "We have carefully prepared this meaningful event to share the moment of welcoming the New Year with our citizens after a year filled with many events. We will conduct a thorough safety inspection in advance and work closely with the police, fire department, and other relevant agencies to ensure a safe event where both citizens and tourists can participate with peace of mind."
