A New Hub for Policy Research in Uijeongbu... First Step in Gyeonggi Research Institute's Relocation
Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) announced on the 29th that the long-delayed relocation of the Gyeonggi Research Institute to Uijeongbu has officially entered the implementation phase with the commencement of the first stage of relocation.

On this day, the Gyeonggi Research Institute held a ceremony at its Northern Office in Singok-dong, Uijeongbu, to mark the first stage of relocation, announcing the move of the president's office and three directly affiliated departments (Future Strategy Research Office, Northern Development Research Office, and Audit Office) to Uijeongbu. As a result of this initial relocation, 35 out of the institute's total 200 employees have begun working in Uijeongbu.
The relocation of the Gyeonggi Research Institute to Uijeongbu was decided in 2021 through the "Gyeonggi Province Public Institution Relocation Contest," but had been delayed for some time due to changing circumstances at the planned site, Camp Kyle. This first phase marks the beginning of a gradual relocation process, achieved through consultations among relevant organizations, and is significant in that it signals the full-scale preparation for a complete relocation in the future.
With the Gyeonggi Research Institute, responsible for Gyeonggi Province's policy research, relocating to Uijeongbu, conditions have been created for policy research functions previously concentrated in southern Gyeonggi to expand into the northern region. This is expected to enable local issues and circumstances in northern Gyeonggi to be more directly reflected in the policy research process.
The Gyeonggi Research Institute is a public research institution that conducts policy and commissioned research, with more than half of its workforce composed of researchers holding master's and doctoral degrees. With this relocation, the influx of specialized research personnel into Uijeongbu is expected to expand the region's research base as well.
In addition, the institute's approximately 500 annual research outcomes are expected to support the overall formulation of municipal policies by being utilized in reviews of policies related to the use of returned U.S. military sites, the creation of advanced industrial complexes, and future industries such as artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology (bio).

Mayor Kim Donggeun stated, "The relocation of the Gyeonggi Research Institute is a process of expanding Gyeonggi Province's policy research functions into the region," adding, "We will continue to provide the necessary administrative support in cooperation with relevant organizations to ensure that discussions on a complete relocation proceed smoothly in the future."
