Sokcho City in Gangwon Province has further strengthened its water management system by completing the covering construction of the sedimentation basin and intake well at Seorak Water Purification Plant, following the installation of a cover for the sedimentation basin at Sokcho Water Purification Plant in September last year to provide citizens with safe and clean tap water.

On the 29th, Sokcho City held a completion ceremony to mark the end of the covering construction, attended by related organizations, social group leaders, and local residents.

The biggest problem facing water purification plants operated by local governments across the country is the inflow and occurrence of small organisms (larvae). Many local governments are making efforts to prevent the entry of small organisms and other foreign substances, but continue to face difficulties.

In response, Sokcho City proactively invested a total project cost of 2.8 billion won in 2024 to complete the installation of a sedimentation basin cover at Sokcho Water Purification Plant. At the time, the project drew significant attention for its use of a PVF membrane structure that perfectly covered the 660-square-meter sedimentation basin, along with various state-of-the-art facilities.

This year, the city secured a project budget of 750 million won and carried out covering construction by installing a 341-square-meter PVF membrane structure over the sedimentation basin and intake well at Seorak Water Purification Plant. The PVF membrane material is highly durable, corrosion-resistant, and does not produce environmentally harmful substances, making it possible to manage drinking water-which is directly linked to citizens' health-even more safely.

The structure is equipped with three air curtains at entry and exit points to prevent the inflow of insects and other pests, as well as six insect traps installed separately to eliminate any insects that may enter.

Through this project, it is expected that the clear raw water from Seoraksan, recognized as one of the cleanest in the country, will be delivered even more safely to citizens and tourists through systematic and hygienic water supply management.

Lee Byungseon, Mayor of Sokcho, stated, "We are now able to produce and supply tap water, which is closely tied to citizens' daily lives and health, in a more stable and cleaner manner. Going forward, we will continue to further systematize and advance the hygiene management of our water purification plants and water supply networks to prevent water quality accidents and ensure that citizens can drink tap water with confidence."
