"I Have Never Been Involved in Any Illegal Activities"
Legal Action Considered Against Malicious False Reports
Byungtae Yoon, Mayor of Naju in South Jeolla Province, clarified that he has never been involved in any illegal activities, including recruiting party members or paying party membership fees on behalf of others, in response to recent reports by certain online media outlets raising suspicions of "proxy payment of party membership fees."
On December 29, Mayor Yoon issued a statement saying, "This issue, which has become controversial mainly on social media, is entirely unrelated to me, and I have no knowledge of the matter whatsoever." He added, "As the local elections approach, I deeply regret that unverified claims and speculations are being interpreted arbitrarily and spreading into a political controversy."
Mayor Yoon stated that a thorough investigation by the National Election Commission and judicial authorities is necessary regarding these allegations. He also emphasized the need for "strict measures" in response.
In particular, Mayor Yoon made it clear that he will take a firm stance against malicious false or exaggerated reports and the dissemination of false information.
He stressed, "I will hold those who damage my reputation or interfere with the local elections by spreading and reproducing false information fully accountable through all possible civil and criminal legal actions, including claims for damages."
Mayor Yoon stated, "The city administration must not be shaken by allegations that are not based on facts," and pledged, "I will repay the citizens' trust by ensuring stable city management."
He added, "I will not be swayed by baseless political controversies and will remain dedicated to city governance. I will focus all efforts on key projects preparing for Naju’s next 100 years, such as the construction of the nuclear fusion research facility known as the 'artificial sun,' as well as on urgent issues directly related to citizens’ safety, such as responding to the recent spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza."
