The police announced that they are currently analyzing materials voluntarily submitted by Coupang in connection with the customer data leak incident, and stated that they will hold the company strictly accountable if any manipulation of the submitted materials is found.
At a regular press briefing on the 29th, Park Jeongbo, Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, said, "We are reviewing the materials submitted by Coupang, and forensic procedures are underway for electronic devices. If it is confirmed that false or manipulated materials were submitted, or if Coupang cooperated with the investigative authorities based on false information, we will regard this as illegal conduct and hold the responsible parties strictly accountable."
Previously, on the 21st, the police received a voluntary submission from Coupang, including a written statement allegedly prepared by a former employee of Chinese nationality suspected of leaking personal information, as well as related evidence such as a laptop said to have been used in the crime.
On the 25th, Coupang stated in a press release, "We have identified the former employee responsible for leaking customer information, and the suspect has confessed to the entire crime and provided detailed testimony regarding how they accessed the customer data." The company also added that it had retrieved and secured all devices and hard disks used to access and steal customer information, and that its internal investigation confirmed there was no external transmission of the data.
The police are analyzing digital data and other electronic information obtained from Coupang through six rounds of search and seizure operations.
The police believe that only after the analysis of the seized materials is complete will they be able to provide more detailed explanations regarding the possible involvement of accomplices other than the Chinese national suspect, as well as the scope of the data leak. A police official stated, "Once the analysis is finished, there will be an opportunity to explain the scope of the submitted materials and other details."
Additionally, although there has been controversy over the legality of Coupang's internal investigation, it has been confirmed that, as of now, no complaints have been filed in connection with this issue.
