Total 26% Increase Over Three Years Until 2028
Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province announced on December 29 that it will increase the price of pay-as-you-throw garbage bags by an average of 8% each year for three years, from next year through 2028, for a total increase of 26%. This is the first price increase in 20 years since 2006.
A city official explained, "This fee hike is due to the growing deficit in waste disposal costs as prices have been frozen for 20 years. However, considering the burden on citizens, we decided to raise the prices gradually over three years."
Accordingly, the price of a 3-liter pay-as-you-throw bag will rise from the current 80 won to 90 won next year, 100 won in 2027, and 110 won in 2028. For the 10-liter bag, which currently costs 250 won, the price will increase to 270-280 won next year depending on the type (general, food waste, or reusable), 290-320 won in 2027, and 310-360 won in 2028.
The price of the 20-liter bag, currently 500 won, will also rise to 530-570 won next year, 570-640 won in 2027, and 610-710 won in 2028.
