Expansion of Eco-Friendly Commercial Vehicles
and Strengthening Public Transportation Integration
Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Sung Sangjin) has won the grand prize in the "2025 Sustainable Transport City Evaluation" hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, receiving the highest rating for three consecutive years. Following its wins in 2023 and 2024, the city has once again proven the effectiveness of its eco-friendly transport policies and public transportation-centered urban strategies.

Since 2010, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has conducted a comprehensive evaluation of environmental, social, and economic indicators in the transportation sector for 71 cities with populations of over 100,000, aiming to encourage the establishment of sustainable transportation systems. Seongnam City has won the grand prize for three consecutive years in the "Group B" category, which targets single cities with populations of over 300,000.
The city's consistent success can be attributed to its ongoing policy of expanding eco-friendly commercial vehicles. Seongnam has continuously increased the supply of eco-friendly vehicles, focusing on buses, freight trucks, and taxis. This effort has consistently earned high marks in the annual evaluations. These initiatives have led to significant environmental achievements, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and road-based pollution sources, forming the foundation of the city’s sustainable transportation policy.
In addition, Seongnam's public transportation linkage policies have evolved each year, broadening the scope of its achievements. In 2023, the city established a pilot zone for personal mobility (PM) devices in the Pangyo Techno Valley area, laying the groundwork for integrating personal mobility with public transportation. This created a structure in which various transportation modes could be organically utilized for daily travel. In 2024, the city introduced a bicycle road (shared for bicycles and pedestrians) in the Pangyo Daejang district, integrating bicycle use with public transportation and thereby improving convenience for citizens and promoting eco-friendly transport.
For the 2025 evaluation, Seongnam’s transportation policies in response to the opening of Seongnam Station on the metropolitan express railway (GTX-A) were recognized as key achievements. Projects such as reorganizing bus routes and operating express commuter buses to connect rail and bus services have increased the total public transportation travel distance, which was reflected in the comprehensive evaluation. The city received high marks for expanding the benefits of the new railway throughout the entire urban mobility system.
From 2023 to 2025, Seongnam City has consistently pursued policies centered on expanding eco-friendly commercial vehicles, while step by step integrating public transportation, personal mobility, bicycles, and railways. The city’s efforts to not only achieve short-term results but also supplement and expand its policies each year are considered the key factors behind its three consecutive grand prize wins.
Mayor Sung Sangjin stated, "Winning the grand prize for three consecutive years is the result of continuously implementing transportation policies that consider both citizen convenience and environmental values," adding, "We will continue to build a sustainable transport city in Seongnam by expanding eco-friendly transportation and maintaining a focus on public transportation-centered policies."
