Nikkei reported on December 27 that the number of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) involving Japanese companies reached an all-time high this year.
According to data compiled by local M&A advisory firm Recof through mid-December, the number of Japan-related M&A deals-including overseas acquisitions by Japanese companies and acquisitions of Japanese firms by foreign private equity funds-hit 4,950 this year, already surpassing last year's previous record of about 4,700 deals.
In terms of value, the total M&A volume this year has already reached 33 trillion yen (approximately 305 trillion won), breaking the previous record of 29 trillion yen set in 2018.
Nikkei analyzed that "there is growing pressure for corporate reform in the market, and voluntary delistings due to group restructuring and private equity fund involvement are also increasing."
