The event provided a time of communication and unity, as North Korean defectors, who usually find it difficult to interact due to their respective occupations, gathered in one place to share a carefully prepared meal, catch up with one another, and talk about the joys and sorrows they have experienced during their settlement process.

Choi Kimoon, Mayor of Yeongcheon, delivered a message of encouragement at the event, saying, “I am very proud to see you all living steadfastly and fulfilling your roles as members of the local community despite being in an unfamiliar environment. As you have worked hard this year, I hope that the new year will be filled with even more hope and good things.”

In particular, the event was made even more meaningful as the executives of the Yeongcheon City Association of North Korean Defectors donated 500,000 won, which they had collected together, to promote coexistence with the local community.

This donation is being recognized as a great example, as it shows the association members transitioning from being recipients of help to becoming active contributors who spread warmth within the community.

Seol Younghee, President of the Yeongcheon City Association of North Korean Defectors, said, “I am happy that members can rely on each other and spend a warm year-end together. We will continue to strive to be a group that stands tall as a proud member of the local community, practicing unity and sharing.”
