10-Minute Reduction in Travel Time on National Road No. 34
Significant Improvement in Traffic Convenience for Road Users
The winding mountain road has now been straightened.
The 21.9-kilometer road improvement project on National Road No. 34, connecting Andong City and Yeongdeok County in North Gyeongsang Province, has been completed and will officially open at 11:00 a.m. on December 31.
The National Road No. 34 road improvement project was included in the 3rd Five-Year National Road and Local Road Plan in 2012. The Busan Regional Construction Management Administration completed the basic and detailed designs in 2015, and construction began in 2017.
In 2024, the first phase of construction was completed for major structures along the 9.3-kilometer Yeongdeok section, including two tunnels (Hwangjang and Sinan) and four bridges (two in Sinan-ri, one in Nulgok-ri, and one in Sinyang-ri). Additional works followed, such as the creation of an emergency escape route in the Hwangjang Tunnel and the installation of drainage systems for the bridge sections.
The project took a total of nine years and cost 219.8 billion won. The travel time between Andong and Yeongdeok on National Road No. 34 will be reduced by 10 minutes, and the Yeongdeok section alone will see a reduction of about 5 minutes.
Yeongdeok County assesses that this project has improved safety and reduced traffic accidents by addressing dangerous steep slopes and sharp curves, such as those at Hwangjangjae, along the existing National Road No. 34.
In particular, the improved transportation in inland areas such as Jipum-myeon and Dalsan-myeon, as well as the northern region of North Gyeongsang Province, is expected to further enhance the flow of logistics and accessibility for tourists.
Kang Sinyeol, Director of the Construction Division of Yeongdeok County, stated, "With the successful completion of the Andong-Yeongdeok road improvement project on National Road No. 34, we expect a significant enhancement in traffic safety and convenience for road users. We also believe that improved accessibility between regions will revitalize local industries and the economy."
Yeongdeok County plans to continuously monitor residents' inconveniences and suggestions related to the road construction after the opening, and will do its utmost to ensure resident safety and create a pleasant road environment.
