Gyeonggi Education Office to Revise "Guidelines for Placement and Operation of Career Guidance Teachers in Elementary and Secondary Schools" for First Time in 5 Years

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education will revise its "Guidelines for the Placement and Operation of Career Guidance Teachers in Elementary and Secondary Schools" next year for the first time in five years.

This revision is being planned to establish institutional standards that will address the accumulated administrative and support work burden on career guidance teachers in the field, as well as issues of unclear authority and ambiguous roles. The goal is to enable these teachers to focus on their core responsibilities, based on feedback from educational stakeholders and a review of existing policies.

The main changes include: ▲ requiring elementary school career guidance teachers to complete 30 hours of job training; ▲ establishing principles for appointing career guidance teachers as department heads; ▲ mandating at least two hours per semester of career-linked classes in all subjects; ▲ further specifying the duties of career guidance teachers; and ▲ expanding access to NEIS information for career guidance purposes.

Through this revision, the provincial office has clarified the common duties and authority of career guidance teachers. By standardizing roles that previously varied depending on school level and size, the office has improved understanding among school staff.

An official from the provincial office stated, "With this guideline revision, we expect career guidance teachers to serve as specialized personnel who oversee and coordinate career education at schools in a stable manner. We will continue to provide ongoing monitoring and support to ensure that the guidelines are firmly established in school settings."
