Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York, who will be inaugurated on January 1 next year (local time), has appointed Min Jin Lee, the Korean American author famous for the novel "Pachinko," as a member of his inauguration committee.
According to Mamdani's New York mayoral transition team on December 25, the mayor-elect released the list of 48 members of the New York mayoral inauguration committee the previous day, which includes Lee.
Lee, who resides in the United States, gained worldwide popularity with her novel "Pachinko," which tells the story of a Zainichi Korean family. The inauguration committee will provide input on the New York mayoral inauguration ceremony and co-host the event with Mamdani.
Previously, the New York mayoral transition team announced that Mamdani will take the oath of office at 1 p.m. (Eastern Time) on January 1 in front of New York City Hall.
A public block party, in which tens of thousands of citizens can participate, will be held on Broadway near City Hall before and after the inauguration ceremony.
Before the public inauguration event, Mamdani plans to take a separate oath of office at midnight on January 1, when his term as mayor begins. According to ABC, New York State Attorney General Letitia James will officiate this oath-taking.
The public inauguration oath ceremony at New York City Hall will be officiated by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (Independent, Vermont), a leading figure in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the political faction to which Mamdani belongs.
Mamdani, an Indian American Muslim who was previously a relatively unknown New York State Assembly member, won the New York mayoral election held on November 4 with a pledge to improve the lives of New Yorkers suffering from high inflation. This marks the first time a Muslim has been elected mayor of New York.
