Kim Yongbeom to Chair Policy Meeting
Interdepartmental Attendance Including Foreign Affairs
The Office of the President will convene a ministerial-level meeting of relevant government departments on December 25, Christmas Day, to formulate countermeasures for the large-scale personal information leak incident at Coupang.
According to political sources, the government decided to hold the meeting during the holiday, taking into account the seriousness of the Coupang incident.
The meeting will reportedly be chaired by Kim Yongbeom, Chief Policy Officer at the Office of the President. In addition to the Minister of Science and ICT, the Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, the Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, and the Chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission, the meeting is expected to be attended by numerous officials from investigative agencies such as the National Police Agency.
Notably, officials from the diplomatic line, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and representatives from the National Security Office, are also expected to attend. This is interpreted as an effort to look into the recent allegations of Coupang's lobbying activities involving U.S. political and governmental figures.
For the National Assembly’s joint hearing on the Coupang incident scheduled for December 30-31, initially only five standing committees-the Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee; the Political Affairs Committee; the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee; the Climate, Energy, Environment and Labor Committee; and the Planning and Finance Committee-were set to participate. However, the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee was recently added.
