"Stomach Ache After Year-End Parties?"... The UK Recommends 'This'

Eggs, Avocado, Oysters, Apples, and Oatmeal: Effective Foods for Hangover Relief

As year-end parties continue, more people are waking up with hangovers. Experts advise that the first food you consume while hungover can affect both the speed of recovery and the alleviation of symptoms.

Recently, the British media outlet Daily Mail introduced foods effective for hangovers, citing explanations from nutritionist Dr. Emma Derbyshire.

Dr. Derbyshire first highlighted eggs. Eggs are rich in a variety of nutrients, including cysteine. Cysteine can help mitigate the effects of acetaldehyde, which is considered a major cause of hangovers, and may have a positive impact on reducing headaches or stomach discomfort. Eggs also provide vitamin D, magnesium, and essential amino acids.

Adding avocado is another option. Avocados are high in glutathione, which is involved in alcohol metabolism, as well as healthy fats that help absorb fat-soluble nutrients depleted by drinking. There is also research examining the relationship between hangovers and micronutrients. According to a 2019 study from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, people who consumed higher amounts of zinc and vitamin B3 experienced relatively milder hangover symptoms.

Oysters are also considered beneficial for relieving hangovers. Oysters are among the richest sources of zinc; just six medium-sized oysters can provide more than 500% of the recommended daily intake. They are also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce the inflammatory response that causes hangover symptoms.

Apples may also help with hangovers. Pectin in apples inhibits the absorption of alcohol in the intestines. Eating an apple before drinking can lower the peak blood alcohol concentration and help alleviate hangover symptoms.

Oatmeal is another food that can be easily consumed during a hangover. Oatmeal is rich in beta-glucan, which helps protect the intestinal lining. Beta-glucan is a soluble dietary fiber with anti-inflammatory properties that soothes the irritated digestive tract and slows glucose absorption, helping to stabilize blood sugar levels.
