On December 24, President Lee Jaemyung officially designated the humidifier disinfectant disaster as a "social disaster" and announced a comprehensive support plan to fully compensate the victims.
On December 24, President Lee wrote on Facebook under the title, "The State Will Fully Compensate for the Humidifier Disinfectant Disaster," stating, "It is much too late. I bow my head in condolence and sympathy to all the victims and their bereaved families. The government will clearly define the humidifier disinfectant disaster as a social disaster and establish a comprehensive support plan for the victims to ensure full compensation."
President Lee said, "No one could have imagined that humidifier disinfectants, which have been used without suspicion since 1994, would take away the health and lives of beloved family members. The number of reported victims has exceeded 8,000, and 6,000 cases have been officially recognized."
He added, "It took a long time for the cause to be revealed in 2011, and even after that, 15 years have passed. It is difficult to even fathom the sense of injustice and devastation that must have been felt in a reality where no one has taken responsibility."
The comprehensive support plan for victims will be tailored to individual needs. President Lee stated, "We plan to provide customized support to address the difficulties faced by students, young people in military service, and workers in their respective situations. We will also work closely with the National Assembly to promote the revision of the Special Act on Humidifier Disinfectants."
President Lee further promised, "Protecting the lives and safety of the people is the most fundamental duty of the state. We will fundamentally review all systems and management to ensure that tragedies like the humidifier disinfectant disaster never happen again."
