Chungnam Province announced on December 24 that it had awarded the 'Chungnam Future Mobility Industry Development Merit' commendation plaque from the governor to Jang Gitae, Director of the Mobility Research Institute at KAIST, and Kim Yongju, Professor of the Department of Biosystems Mechanical Engineering at Chungnam National University, in recognition of their contributions to building the future mobility industry ecosystem.
This commendation was given in high appreciation of their pivotal roles in establishing the industrial ecosystem through core technology research and the development of demonstration-based infrastructure in the future mobility sector.
Since its opening in Naepo New Town on November 13 last year, the KAIST Mobility Research Institute has rapidly established itself as a key hub driving technology commercialization and industrial expansion, focusing on cutting-edge research in future mobility technologies.
The institute serves as a bridge between research and industry by performing multifaceted functions, including: conducting research on core and fundamental technologies for future mobility; fostering technology startups and venture companies; attracting venture capital investment firms; connecting with domestic and international partner organizations; and creating an industry ecosystem based on collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions.
In particular, despite having been open for only a short period, the institute has achieved the milestone of attracting a total of 28 companies and organizations to set up offices within the facility, demonstrating the potential for the concentration and expansion of the future mobility industry ecosystem in Chungnam.
Chungnam National University played a key role as the lead institution in attracting the 'Eco-friendly Digital and Electrified Agricultural Machinery Demonstration Base Construction Project,' an industrial innovation infrastructure initiative by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, to the province this past April.
This project is considered a symbolic case of expanding the agricultural machinery industry base, which had previously been concentrated in the Gyeongsang and Jeolla regions, to Chungnam. It is expected to serve as a turning point in addressing the imbalance of industrial infrastructure among regions.
The project will function as a core pillar of the Naepo Agro-Bio Cluster and is expected to promote the advancement of Chungnam's agro-bio industry and the integration of future mobility technologies through the demonstration of eco-friendly digital and electrified agricultural machinery.
The province plans to continue providing strategic policy support to ensure that the achievements of research institutions and universities are further disseminated throughout the industry and the region.
Jeon Hyungsik, Vice Governor for Political Affairs, said, "I would like to thank both individuals for their significant contributions to laying the foundation for the growth of Chungnam's future mobility industry," adding, "We look forward to your continued roles and dedication in ensuring that Korea can lead the future mobility industry."
