'Dramatically Upgraded' Dongjak District Village Bus Stops

61 New Boarding Shelters Added
Heated Benches and Real-Time Information Now Available

The village bus stops in Dongjak District, Seoul (District Mayor Park Ilha), have undergone a comprehensive upgrade. The waiting areas have been transformed into convenient spaces equipped with boarding shelters, heated benches, and real-time bus information. On the 24th, the district announced the completion of the "Dongjak-Style Village Bus Boarding Shelter Project," which was implemented to improve convenience for public transportation users.

This project, which began in 2023 and was carried out in phases focusing on outdated stops or those lacking dedicated waiting areas, resulted in the installation of new boarding shelters at 61 locations this year alone (25 new installations and 36 replacements).

Taking into account the width of sidewalks and surrounding conditions, customized shelters were installed: five standard-type, 19 setback-type, eight compact-type, and 29 reverse-type. The total number of Dongjak-Style boarding shelters has increased to 70, and waiting facilities have now been provided at all 106 eligible stops out of 290 stops in the district.

Nineteen new heated benches have also been installed for passengers during the cold winter. Including 22 mounted heaters, a total of 182 heating units are now in operation.

The number of Bus Information Terminals (BIT), which provide real-time bus arrival information, has also been significantly increased. While there were only 23 terminals as of July 2022, this year the number has grown to 218 (59 mounted and 159 signboard-type terminals). Devices have been installed at every stop where installation is possible, and at 72 locations where installation was not feasible due to private property or lack of electricity supply, Dongjak-Style signboards have been used instead to minimize any gaps in information provision.

Going forward, the district plans to immediately address resident inconveniences through continuous on-site inspections and to strengthen post-management by systematically recording inspection histories in the facility management log.

Park Ilha, Mayor of Dongjak District, stated, "We have completed the installation of both boarding shelters and BIT to ensure that residents experience no inconvenience when using village buses, which serve as a vital means of transportation." He added, "We will continue to do our best to create a safe and comfortable transportation environment for our residents."
