This commendation reflects high praise for Samyook Busan Hospital’s proactive role in accepting and providing intensive care for critically ill emergency patients, thereby strengthening the local healthcare safety net in Busan, where it is difficult to ensure rapid treatment connections for severe emergency cases.
During a meeting held that day with Seo District Mayor Han Soo Gong, the main agenda was the ongoing issue of gaps in the acceptance of critically ill emergency patients across Busan. It was pointed out that, although emergency rooms are in operation, there are structural limitations due to the lack of intensive care unit capacity to actually treat critical patients, resulting in delays in patient transfer and treatment.
Representatives from Samyook Busan Hospital emphasized that rather than simply increasing the number of beds, strengthening the intensive care unit’s capacity to stably treat acute critical patients is the fundamental solution. They also highlighted the need to train dedicated subspecialist intensivists and to establish a continuous critical care system.
Jae Young Choi, Chief of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, stated, “The issue of critically ill emergency patients is not the burden of a single hospital, but a problem for the entire regional healthcare system. Public support for the specialized personnel and systems required to actually operate intensive care units is absolutely necessary.”
Samyook Busan Hospital has played a key role in critical care in the region by securing additional intensive care unit beds and actively accepting and treating high-acuity acute patients, such as those with severe pneumonia, sepsis, and multiple organ failure.
Seo District Mayor Han Soo Gong said, “Samyook Busan Hospital plays an important role in supporting critical care in the region,” adding, “We will actively review institutional support and cooperation measures to strengthen the capacity for critical patient care.”
It is expected that, with this commendation as a starting point, Samyook Busan Hospital’s experience in acute critical care and its operational system will be widely shared within the local community, positively influencing discussions on improving the emergency critical care system in Busan.
