One-Hour Travel from Hongcheon to Seoul Cheongnyangni
1.0995 Trillion Won Invested... Targeting Opening in 2034
Governor Kim Dongyeon: "Gyeonggi Province Will Actively Support the Project"
The "Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railway" construction project, a core transportation axis and a long-awaited wish of 100 years for the eastern Gyeonggi region and Gangwon region, has finally passed the government’s threshold.
Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 23rd that, as a result of the 12th Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee meeting held by the Ministry of Economy and Finance on the 22nd, the Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railway project has officially passed the preliminary feasibility study.
The Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railway is a single-track line with a total length of 32.7 kilometers, connecting Yongmun Station in Yongmun-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province, to Hongcheon-eup, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Province, at a total project cost of 1.0995 trillion won. The route is planned to pass through Cheongun-myeon in Yangpyeong-gun and Nam-myeon in Hongcheon-gun, among other areas.
This is the first railway project to connect the central inland region of Gangwon and the eastern region of Gyeonggi.
Once the railway is completed, it will be possible to reach Cheongnyangni in Seoul from Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Province, in about one hour. This is expected to improve the quality of life for residents in the eastern areas such as Cheongun-myeon and Danwol-myeon in Yangpyeong-gun, and help alleviate chronic weekend traffic congestion near Yangpyeong-gun. As the first metropolitan railway connecting the Seoul metropolitan area and the inland of Gangwon, it is also anticipated to contribute to balanced regional development.
Kim Dongyeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railway is a key line that will greatly enhance transportation convenience for residents in eastern Gyeonggi," adding, "Gyeonggi Province will actively support this project so that the eastern metropolitan area can move beyond being a transportation-isolated region and become a core axis driving balanced regional development."
Gyeonggi Province plans to closely cooperate with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other relevant agencies to ensure that subsequent procedures, such as the establishment of the basic plan, detailed design, and groundbreaking, proceed without delay following the completion of the preliminary feasibility study.
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province will begin establishing the basic plan and conducting a feasibility study under the supervision of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport starting next year, with the goal of commencing construction in 2026 and opening the line in 2034.
