The Gyeonggi Regional Unification Plus Center, where this meeting was held, opened on September 15 and was established on land returned by the US military. The transformation of this site from a symbol of division and security into a space for peace and unification carries significant symbolic meaning. Gyeonggi Province is actively utilizing this symbolic space as a hub for peaceful unification education, and the committee meeting being held here for the first time since the center's opening added further significance.
The Peaceful Unification Education Committee, chaired by the Second Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs of Gyeonggi Province, was attended by the Director of the Peace and Cooperation Bureau, as well as academics and relevant experts. As experts in the fields of peace and unification gathered in one place, they provided a wide range of advice and opinions on the 2026 operational plan for the Gyeonggi Regional Unification Plus Center, exploring the center's role and future direction.
In accordance with the "Gyeonggi Province Ordinance on the Promotion of Peaceful Unification Education," Gyeonggi Province has established mid- to long-term plans every five years to ensure the systematic and continuous implementation of peaceful unification education. The province has also continuously expanded hands-on educational programs that leverage the characteristics of border regions, as well as peace and unification education involving culture, arts, youth, and young adults.
The committee reviewed key agenda items, including the achievements of peaceful unification education initiatives in 2025 and plans for 2026, the 2026 operational plan for the Gyeonggi Regional Unification Plus Center, and the performance evaluation of peaceful unification education support projects in 2025. In particular, through the performance evaluation of support projects, the effectiveness and areas for improvement of each project were shared, and opinions were presented on ways to enhance the effectiveness of the education, improve operational methods, and strengthen public-private cooperation.
In addition, discussions were held on the future direction of peaceful unification education, taking into account the changing international situation and inter-Korean relations.
Regarding the 2026 plan for peaceful unification education, the province aims to raise public awareness and build consensus on unification by strengthening practical, everyday education and community-based programs, while expanding the educational and experiential functions of the Gyeonggi Regional Unification Plus Center as a hub.
Kim Dae-soon, Second Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs, stated, "Peaceful unification education plays an important role in helping future generations internalize the values of peace and coexistence," adding, "Based on the valuable opinions presented by the committee, we will continue to develop the Gyeonggi Province model for peaceful unification education."
The Gyeonggi Province Peaceful Unification Education Committee serves as a deliberative and advisory body responsible for establishing plans and monitoring annual implementation of peaceful unification education. The province intends to further enhance the quality of its peaceful unification education policies through ongoing committee discussions.
