Ministry Reports "Crowd Safety Management Measures" at December 23 Cabinet Meeting
Special Year-End and New Year Safety Period Designated Until January 4 Next Year
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has announced that it will intensively manage areas where large crowds are expected to gather during the year-end and New Year period.
On December 23, at a Cabinet meeting, the Ministry reported its "Crowd Safety Management Measures." Under these measures, the crisis alert level will be set to "Attention" until January 4 of next year, and the government-wide response will be strengthened.
In particular, safety management plans and advance inspections will be carried out for 404 events held nationwide. Fourteen areas where more than 20,000 people are expected to gather at peak times will be managed with special focus.
On Christmas, six locations will be managed: Myeong-dong, Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam, and Seongsu in Seoul, as well as Seomyeon in Busan. For New Year's Eve bell-ringing, two locations will be managed: Jongno in Seoul and Jung-gu in Daegu. For sunrise and sunset events, six locations will be managed: Achasan in Seoul, Gwangalli in Busan, Ganjeolgot in Ulsan, Gyeongpodae in Gangneung, Hyangiram in Yeosu, and Homigot in Pohang.
The Ministry plans to dispatch on-site support personnel and conduct joint advance inspections and situation management with local governments.
Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Hojoong stated, "We will concentrate the capabilities of relevant agencies, especially in key management areas, to thoroughly prepare and prevent crowd accidents like the October 29 Itaewon disaster from happening again."
