Ministry of Land to Hold Forum on Realizing Gadeokdo New Airport's Future Vision: "Safe, People-Centered Gateway for the Southern Region"

Refining Design Strategies Together with the Local Community and Experts

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Corporation announced on the 23rd that they will hold the "Strategic Forum for Realizing the Future Vision of Gadeokdo New Airport" at the Busan Port International Exhibition and Convention Center (BPEX). More than 150 participants from industry, academia, research, and government will attend to discuss the blueprint for the new airport.

This forum has been organized to share concrete design strategies and objectives so that Gadeokdo New Airport can serve as a new gateway for the southern region of Korea, beyond being a simple transportation facility. The government and the corporation have reviewed design strategies for Gadeokdo New Airport through expert consultations and internal competitions within the corporation. At this forum, a total of four design strategies will be shared with the local community and relevant experts, and will be further developed together.

Gadeokdo New Airport will be developed as a people-centered airport that prioritizes user convenience. Intuitive circulation routes and universal design will be applied to enhance user-friendliness, and themed spaces reflecting the region's history and culture will be created. Universal design refers to a design approach that allows everyone to use the facilities conveniently, regardless of age, gender, nationality, or disability status.

Safety infrastructure will also be strengthened. The airport will be equipped with an automatic runway foreign object detection system, intelligent CCTV, and a quarantine system to respond to infectious diseases. Smart technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) security screening, robotic services, and an integrated airport operations platform will also be introduced. The goal is to achieve RE100 (100% renewable energy) and carbon neutrality by 2045. Based on zero-energy design, themed rooftop landscaping and indoor plant landscaping will be installed to harmonize with the natural environment.

From an economic perspective, the airport will serve as a complex logistics hub connecting the southern region's industry, tourism, and logistics sectors. The airport infrastructure will be designed with consideration for integration with Urban Air Mobility (UAM).

Kang Heeup, the Second Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "Today's forum is a very important occasion to discuss and concretize the vision and direction that Gadeokdo New Airport should pursue," and added, "We will ensure the construction proceeds smoothly so that Gadeokdo New Airport becomes a key axis for balanced national development and a new growth hub for the southern region."

Lee Yoonsang, President of the Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Corporation, said, "We will faithfully reflect the discussions from this forum in the design and implementation process," and added, "The corporation will responsibly fulfill its role to successfully complete Gadeokdo New Airport."
